Training: How often do you need to go to the gym as a beginner?

Below we break down our 2 easiest steps to getting started with your gym routine, that have nothing scientific or over-complicated to them, but implemented correctly will help you more on your journey to success than any scientific supplement stack or latest gimmick online.

Joining the gym can be a scary thought for some people. So much information on the internet, so many Instagram models sharing tips and tricks, and endless magazines and supplements to be overwhelmed.

At Retrofit London, we are results-focused but also place a huge emphasis on enjoying your training, while working hard towards your goal. We like to set small goals that all add up to a bigger goal. A lot of mini sprints, rather than a long marathon.

There is also a strange idea that you must be fit, before joining the gym and this can’t be further from the truth. If you’ve taken a break from a fitness routine, or you’re brand new to fitness, getting into a routine that’s focused on the right things is a must-do.

How many days a week are you available to take part in exercise?

The reason for the question is to set a realistic number that can be adhered to. The last thing that we want is to create possible reasons for negativity to creep in, and one of these methods is by having very high expectations vs the reality of your weekly schedule.

A tip our trainers like to advise is to plan out your week’s training in advance and commit to those sessions. If you've got a busy week with work or travel, then prepare for that, if you've got a quieter week where you're able to train more, go for it. Remember, a goal of training once a week is better than saying you'll train 7 times and don't make any.

What days/times are your friends/colleagues going to the using the gym?

It is always nice to partner up with somebody you know to assist each other with motivation but also accountability. You can also find classes that are enjoyable and available when you are.

If you don't have a workout partner or don't fancy classes, then personal training is a great way to be kept accountable for your workouts, and other areas of your lifestyle like nutrition, motivation, goal setting and mental wellbeing. Once you have the days that you can personally commit to, this should be the foundation of your training week. Remember to focus on the correct areas of fitness like enjoyment, releasing endorphins, and being in a community of like-minded people.
